How different is an Isolation Transformer from an Autotransformer?

An isolation transformer and auto transformers both are electrical transformers but have different numbers of windings. Like isolation Transformer will have 2 windings called primary and secondary coil winding wherein an Autotransformer comes with a single winding. 

In Isolation, Transformer windings are separated by insulation. The risk of electrocution is reduced through this insulation when the active part touches the earth. Whereas in Autotransformer the same winding acts as two windings bearing the primary and secondary sides of the autotransformer.

Working Principle of an Isolation Transformer

Circuit Isolation is the main objective of an isolation transformer in India. Capacitive coupling between the two windings is achieved through the design and manufacturing of the isolation transformer. Alternating current (AC) current from the primary to the secondary is also coupled through capacitance between primary and secondary windings.

Working Principle of an Autotransformer

It is mainly used to transform voltage by regulating the voltage of transmission lines and this is the main objective of an autotransformer.  According to load, an autotransformer can on its own adjust the voltage with just one winding. However, these autotransformers don’t work on DC or direct current, they are made only for AC currents specifically.
